The machine was newly developed by BMW for the 2016 touring car race. The engine was restricted to a 4.4L V8 twin power turbo with a commercially available racing machine in accordance with the GT3 classes stipulated by the FIA. Same with M6 Coupé, the base machine was powered by a 4.4-litre V8 engine with M Twin Power Turbo technology. Besides restrictor equipped and so on under GT3 regulations, the power was adjusted through Balance of Performance formulae to 500hp around, which was said to be less than a commercially available vehicle.
The experience and technology unique of BMW have been made into a great GT machine. It has been delivered to selected racing teams around the world since 2016. In addition to Nürburgring 24-hour race, the machine delivered to Falken Motorsports Team also participated in the VLN Nürburgring Endurance Series, a series of endurance races on the Nürburgring circuit. In the fourth round, which was held just before the 24-hour race in 2017, the M6 GT3 was successful to win the race.
